How can we help you?

Forwarding Crime & Safety posts to law enforcement

Last Updated: Nov 22, 2016 03:06PM PST
NOTE: This feature is not available in all neighborhoods. You must have a law enforcement agency using Nextdoor in your area, and they must have also chosen to enable this feature.

If you have an active law enforcement agency in your area such as the Police Department or Sheriff's Office using Nextdoor, you may have the ability to forward your Crime & Safety posts and urgent alerts to them. We hope that by making it even simpler to communicate with local law enforcement, Nextdoor can continue to help make communities safer and better connected.

Trust and privacy are central to Nextdoor, and we have designed this feature to ensure that these values are preserved. Your local agencies CANNOT view any content that you do not choose to directly share with them, just as they cannot view regular posts in your neighborhood today. Additionally, only the original author of a post may choose to share it with the police, and replies to that post are never shared.

Please keep in mind that this feature is not an emergency reporting system, and that officials from the agency may not respond.

To share a post or urgent alert on a web browser:

  1. Make a post to your newsfeed in the "Crime & Safety" category OR send an urgent alert.
  2. After your post is published, you will be given the option to share it with your local police department.
  3. If you choose to share with the designated agency, a message box will open with the contents of your post. You may send the message as-is or edit it to your liking before sending.

The ability to forward Crime & Safety posts is not yet available on Nextdoor for iPhone.

The ability to forward Crime & Safety posts is not yet available on Nextdoor for Android.
