Sell an item on Nextdoor

The Classifieds category on Nextdoor is a great way for individuals to sell unwanted personal items.

Allowed:

  • Buying and selling personal items
  • Individual owners listing their own property for rent or for sale
  • Individuals neighbors posting Help Wanted requests
  • Pet adoption or re-homing is allowed (but selling of pets is not)

Not allowed:

  • Posting items for sale outside of Classifieds. If you post items for sale outside of Classifieds, you may be reported and the post may be moved to the Classifieds section. If you repeatedly post items outside of Classifieds your posts may be removed.
  • Listing items that you are selling for a business or as part of an incentive sales program, for example, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Amway, Avon, Scentsy, etc.
  • Realtors listing properties
  • Offering services. If you wish to offer services, please see our Community Guidelines on how to do so.

How to post a Classified listing


  1. Click inside the "Post a message, event, poll, or urgent alert to neighbors" box at the top of your neighborhood newsfeed.
  2. Fill out the information for your post.
    • Choose the neighbors you would like to post to. You can select your neighborhood only, or your neighborhood + your Nearby Neighborhoods.
    • Add a subject. We recommend using the name of the item and the price.
    • Type your message.
    • When choosing a category, select Classifieds.
  3. Add a photo if you wish.
  4. Click Post.

  3. Choose an audience for your post.
  4. Tap NEXT in the top right corner.
  5. Add a photo if you wish.
  6. Add a subject and write your message.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. Select Classifieds as the category. 
  9. Tap Post.
  1. Click the green bubble with the white plus sign (+) at the bottom right corner of the app.
  2. Select Message.
  3. Choose an audience for your post.
  4. Tap NEXT in the top right corner.
  5. Add a photo if you wish.
  6. Add a subject and write your message.
  7. Tap NEXT.
  8. Select Classifieds as the category. 
  9. Tap SEND.
 

Our policies against over-posting also apply to listing the same item repeatedly or continually replying to bump the post up in the newsfeed.

Take care! It is up to each individual member of Nextdoor to be appropriately cautious when having a neighbor you may not know come to your home to pick something up. As stated in our Member Agreement, Nextdoor assumes no responsibility for the risk of transactions. You are responsible for making your own decisions about whether and how to interact or work with neighbors you meet through Nextdoor. For example, if you are living alone, you may want to leave an item on the front porch while you are not home or arrange for a drop-off at a public place.

Here are our best practices for selling items on Nextdoor.

  1. Post items in the Classifieds category.
    This will ensure that those most interested in Classifieds will be notified of your item. If you have mis-categorized any of your items, please move them to the Classifieds category. 
     
  2. Attach photos of your item.
    Members will be more likely to purchase your item if they can see recent photos of it. While a good description is nice, a photo is worth a thousand words. If you forget to include a photo with your post, you can edit it to include one (not yet available on the mobile app).
     
  3. Include the price. 
    If the price is negotiable, you can state the amount you are hoping to get for the item followed by "OBO," which means "or best offer." 
     
  4. State the condition of the item. 
    If there are any defects or issues with the item, be sure to mention them so that your neighbors are not surprised later.
     
  5. Include multiple items for sale in the same post.
    If you are moving, or want to post multiple items for sale, we recommend listing multiple items in the same post. This will prevent your neighborhood newsfeed from being overwhelmed with classified listings.
     
  6. Reply privately to those who are interested. 
    If a member wishes to purchase your item or come by to see it, send them a private message to make the arrangements. This courtesy will save everyone in your neighborhood from being notified as you work out the details of a sale.
     
  7. Indicate when the item has sold. 
    a) Edit the subject of the post to include the word "Sold" or "Taken" or similar.
    b) Close the discussion to prevent further replies or inquires to your post.
