How can we help you?

About sponsored content

Last Updated: May 30, 2017 12:17PM PDT
Over the next few months, you will begin to see a limited number of sponsored posts from paying businesses in your daily digest email and newsfeed.

Participating businesses will not have access to your personal information, neighborhood, or the directory. They will only be able to see replies to their own posts and recommendations shared with them.

We believe that when advertising is done right, it can be relevant and add value to the neighborhood. This is our first effort - we will go slow and take the time to get this right.

Initially, we are working with a small group of regional and national businesses. Our longer term vision is to enable every business, large and small, to connect with the communities they serve.

What is a sponsored post?
Sponsored posts are posts created by businesses who are participating in our paid program. They will appear in your newsfeed and daily digest emails, and will look like most other messages on Nextdoor, except that they will be clearly marked as "Sponsored".

Will I get more emails because of sponsored content?
No, you will not get any additional emails that you are not already receiving or expecting to receive based on your current profile settings.

Sponsored posts will appear in the daily digest emails you already receive. If you have opted out of your neighborhood's daily digest emails, you will remain opted out and will not see sponsored posts in email.

Is my personal information shared with any of the businesses?
Businesses will never be able to see conversations between neighbors, nor will they be able to access the directory. They will only be able to see and reply to comments on their own posts and private messages neighbors initiate with them.

If a member chooses to comment on a business's post or share a message, the only information the business will see is the member's profile picture, first name, last initial, and neighborhood. They will not be able to access any additional information about that member.

How does Nextdoor decide which businesses to work with?
Initially, we are working with a small number of businesses that focus a lot of their energy advertising online. Some of these businesses serve customers nationwide. Our vision is to enable every business, whether large or small, to connect with the communities they serve, as we expand the program in the coming months.

How can my business participate?
The sponsored posts program is limited in size at this time, but is rapidly expanding. If you want to be notified of future opportunities, register here.

Can I turn off sponsored content?
As with most websites, there is no way to completely turn off sponsored posts. However, you can hide a particular post by clicking the arrow at the top right of the post and you will never see it again.

Who creates sponsored content?
We work with businesses to help them craft their content so that it fits within the context of Nextdoor, and provides as much value to our members as possible.

One of the key insights we want to understand is what type of content is most beneficial to our members. You may see the format of these posts change based on the feedback we receive from both members and businesses. If you'd like to provide feedback on the content in a sponsored post, please contact us.

Doesn't this violate Nextdoor's Guidelines around self promotion?
We have always believed that there is a tremendous opportunity to connect neighbors with businesses that serve the local community.

Our guidelines around self promotion are designed to ensure that the member experience remains positive and is not overwhelmed by posts around self promotion from businesses and service providers. Sponsored posts and banners are Nextdoor's first steps towards providing a vehicle for communication between businesses and members that maintains this balance.

Long term, we hope this will help alleviate some of the work that has fallen onto Leads and active members who have to police the newsfeed today.

How does Nextdoor decide what sponsored content to show me?
Right now it is very simple. Everyone in the neighborhood sees the same sponsored content.

As we continue to learn and develop this program, we will improve the content you see, to try and better align with the topics relevant to you.

How can I give feedback about the sponsored content I see?
To provide feedback to a business, you can do so directly by sending them a private message. If you'd like to give feedback to Nextdoor, you can contact us here.
