How can we help you?

Nextdoor Interests

Last Updated: Feb 03, 2018 05:56AM PST
Nextdoor Interests is a brand new way to connect with neighbors about the things you have in common. When you add Interests, you’ll be able to get more of the conversations that matter to you. When others post to these Interests, you’ll see these in your feed along with the usual neighborhood updates. Nextdoor Interests is currently available in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, Baltimore and Dallas.

This is still very much a work in progress. As we continue to make adjustments and improvements, tell us if there’s something you love or something that could be better. We’d love to hear what you think!

Development and Known Issues
Are there any known issues with Nextdoor interests or changes you are already planning to make?

Basics

How do I add a Nextdoor Interest?
1. Go to the Nextdoor Interests screen.

  • On the iOS or Android apps the screen is always accessible from the upper right of the home screen.
  • On a mobile web browser it is accessible by tapping the three horizontal line icon (also known as the "hamburger menu" or "more menu").
  • On a desktop/laptop web browser it is accessible from the “All Interests” button in the left hand navigation bar.

2. Click the green Add button next to the Nextdoor Interests you wish to join. Once you have successfully added an Interest, the green button will change to a grey button that reads “Added.” You will then see that Interest in the Your Interests list when you next refresh the page. (To remove a Nextdoor Interest that you have added, click the grey Added button.)

3. If you have added interests to your profile in the past, you will automatically be added to those Nextdoor Interests. In the future, the interests shown on your profile will only reflect your Nextdoor Interests.

How are Nextdoor Interests different from Nextdoor Groups?

There are three main differences between Nextdoor Interests and Nextdoor Groups:
  1. Groups are neighborhood only while Nextdoor Interests are cross neighborhood.
  2. Groups are created by members while Nextdoor Interests are pre-set by Nextdoor (at least for now).
  3. Groups have moderators who can determine who can join a group and whether to remove messages. Nextdoor Interests don’t have dedicated moderators. Instead, messages that are reported for violating the Community Guidelines go to Nextdoor Leads, just as they do for messages posted in other categories.

I want to start a Nextdoor Interest on a topic that is not listed on the All Interests page. What do I do?
Currently, Nextdoor offers a set list of Interests. For now, if you want a new Nextdoor Interest to be offered, click the Suggest an Interest button on the main Nextdoor Interests page. The more members who suggest an interest, the more likely it will be added.

If I no longer want to be included in a Nextdoor Interest, how do I remove it?
Go to the Nextdoor Interests page and click the grey Added button next to the Interest you wish to removed. (In the future, we will likely change how this works to be more intuitive.)

Privacy and Visibility

Do posts to Nextdoor Interests show up on the main feed?
If you have added a Nextdoor Interest, conversations in that Interest will be added to your feed.

When posting to a Nextdoor Interest, can I limit the post to a certain area?
No. For now, that scope includes your neighborhood and nearby neighborhoods (and the nearby neighborhoods include all the possible nearby neighborhoods for your neighborhood; your personal settings currently do not affect the scope of your posts to Interests).

Can I see the other members of an Interest? Will my neighbors see what Nextdoor Interests I have added?
Not yet. But we are planning to add the ability to see the fellow members of a Nextdoor Interest (who live in your neighborhood and nearby neighborhoods) soon. And listing Nextdoor Interests on profile pages is something we will consider as the feature develops.

Nextdoor Interest Hosts

What are Interest Hosts?
Interest Hosts are members who are passionate about a particular Interest (or set of Interests) and are willing to take extra steps to help connect people in their community around these interests.

Their main roles are similar to that of the host of a great party: they welcome people, help get good conversations started, and spread the word about what is happening to others who might be interested.

In addition, during this beta period when the feature is still being developed, we rely on Hosts to provide feedback on how Nextdoor Interests could be improved.

Do Interest Hosts have powers and features not available to members?
Not today. However, Hosts to get access to a
special forum where they can ask questions, provide feedback to the Nextdoor Team, and share best practices with other Hosts from across the country.

How does someone become an Interest Host?
If you want to become a Host, please complete this form.

Can I see who the Hosts are for an Interest?
Not today. Hosts are not yet “badged” in a way.

Can there be more than one Host for an Interest?
Yes. As many people who are interested can become Hosts. The more people who are trying to get a great community started the better!

Guidelines and Moderation

Are the rules and guidelines for Nextdoor Interests different than the rest of Nextdoor?
No. The Community Guidelines generally still apply to Nextdoor Interests. The exception is that Nextdoor Interests are designed to enable deep discussions about topics. So message posting that might be considered "over-posting" on the main feed would likely be allowed in a Nextdoor Interest if it's on-topic and seems appropriate to most other members who have added that Interest.

If something that violates the Community Guidelines is posted to a Nextdoor Interest, what do I do?
You can report messages posted to a Nextdoor Interest the same way that you can report messages posted to the main feed. The reporting systems work in the same way.

Development and Known Issues

Are there any known issues with Nextdoor Interests or changes you are already planning to make?

  • The process for removing an Interest from your account is not intuitive.
  • The "Your Interests" list is supposed to be alphabetical but isn't yet displaying that way.
  • We are currently testing different ways to let people know about new messages in their Interests (which may cause people to receive additional emails or notifications), but do not yet have settings to control the level of emails or notifications.
  • When messages posted in Nextdoor Interests are reported, there is nothing in the Review Reported Content tool that indicates they were posted to an Interest and not the main feed.
  • Posts and replies within Nextdoor Interests are not yet being recorded in the Activity section of profiles.
  • Users using older versions of the apps (iOS before 3.38, Android before 2.31) may experience problems using Nextdoor Interests
  • Not all members who have added an Interest are always included in the count.
