How can we help you?

Forwarding Crime & Safety posts to the Police

Last Updated: Nov 22, 2016 03:06PM PST
NOTE: This feature is not available in all neighbourhoods. The police must be using Nextdoor in your area, and they must have also chosen to enable this feature.

If you have police officers using Nextdoor in your neighbourhood, you may have the ability to forward your Crime & Safety posts and urgent alerts to them. We hope that by making it even simpler to communicate with local public services, Nextdoor can continue to help make communities safer and better connected.

Trust and privacy are central to Nextdoor, and we have designed this feature to ensure that these values are preserved. Your local public services CANNOT view any content that you do not choose to directly share with them, just as they cannot view regular posts in your neighbourhood today. Additionally, only the original author of a post may choose to share it with the police, and replies to that post are never shared.

Please keep in mind that this feature is not an emergency reporting system, and you may not receive a response.

Sharing a post or urgent alert

To share a post or urgent alert on a web browser:

1. Make a post to your newsfeed in the "Crime & Safety" category OR send an urgent alert.

2. After your post is published, you will be given the option to share it with your local police team.

3. If you choose to share with the designated police team, a message box will open with the contents of your post. You may send the message as-is or edit it to your liking before sending.

This feature is not yet available on Nextdoor for iPhone or Nextdoor for Android
