Verify your address

Before you can participate on Nextdoor, you must verify the address used to create your account.

You can join and verify in a neighbourhood if you:

  • rent or own a home in the neighbourhood.
  • own property and are planning to build a home in the neighbourhood.
  • own a rental property in the neighbourhood.

NOTE: Not all methods are available for all addresses. All verification methods are free.

  • Phone number

    To verify your account, your phone billing address must match the address you used to sign up for Nextdoor. We will call you to provide an authentication code that must be entered, as instructed below.

    1. Visit the address verification page.
    2. Select Verify by phone
    3. Enter your phone number.
    4. Select VERIFY.
    5. If we can't find a match, you may need to use a different method to verify.
    1. Open the Nextdoor for iPhone app.
    2. If you haven't created an account on Nextdoor before, select Create an Account and follow the prompts. If you've created an account, but just haven't verified, select Sign in and enter your credentials.
    3. Once you arrive at the "Verify your address" screen, select Next.
    4. Select Verify by phone.
    5. Enter your phone number.
    6. Select Check availability.
    7. If we can't find a match, select Cancel and choose a different verification method.
    1. Open the Nextdoor for Android app.
    2. If you haven't created an account on Nextdoor before, select Create an Account and follow the prompts. If you've created an account, but just haven't verified, select Sign in and enter your credentials.
    3. Once you arrive at the "Verify address" screen, select Next.
    4. Select Verify by phone.
    5. Enter your phone number.
    6. Select Check availability.
    7. If we can't find a match, you may need to use a different method to verify.
  • Postcard 

    Nextdoor will post a postcard containing a verification code to your house. It may take up to 10 business days for the postcard to arrive. Once the postcard arrives, you'll need to enter the code, as instructed below.

    NOTE: Nextdoor does not send verification postcards to P.O. Boxes. If you don't receive post at your physical address, please choose another method to verify.

    1. Visit the address verification page.
    2. Select Verify by postcard.
    3. Select Send me a postcard.
    4. Once you receive your postcard, you'll need to open the address verification page and enter your verification code.
    5. Select Verify.
    1. Open the Nextdoor for iPhone app.
    2. If you haven't created an account on Nextdoor before, select Create an Account and follow the prompts. If you've created an account, but just haven't verified, select Sign in and enter your credentials.
    3. Once you arrive at the "Verify your address" screen, select Next.
    4. Select Verify by postcard.
    5. Follow the prompts.
    6. Once you receive your postcard, you'll need to open the Nextdoor for iPhone app and enter your verification code.
    7. Select Verify.
    1. Open the Nextdoor for Android app.
    2. If you haven't created an account on Nextdoor before, click Create an Account and follow the prompts. If you've created an account, but just haven't verified, select Sign in and enter your credentials.
    3. Once you arrive at the "Verify address" screen, select Next.
    4. Select Verify by postcard.
    5. Follow the prompts.
    6. Once you receive your postcard, you'll need to open the Nextdoor for Android app and enter your verification code.
    7. Select Verify.

    Tip: Nextdoor sends two kinds of postcards: invitation and verification. Please make sure you are entering a verification code (not an invitation code!) when attempting to verify.

  • Lead

    Leads have the ability to verify neighbours they know personally by using the Verify neighbours feature.

    1. Visit the Verify neighbours page.
    2. A list of unverified members will display.
    • If you can vouch that a listed member lives within the neighbourhood, select Verify next to their name.
    • If you'd like to get in touch with a neighbour who is unverified, select message​ next to their name.
    • If you know a listed member does not live within your Nextdoor neighbourhood, select Hide to the right of the green "Verify" button. 
    1. Select the Menu icon in the lower right corner.
    2. Select Verify Neighbours.
    3. A list of unverified members will display.
    • If you can vouch that a listed member lives within the neighbourhood, select Verify next to their name.
    • If you'd like to get in touch with a neighbour who is unverified, select their name, then click Send private message.​

    The ability to verify neighbours is not yet available on Nextdoor for Android.

If you are unable to verify using the methods above, you can still verify by sending us a copy of an official document (driver's license, recent utility bill, rental agreement, etc.) that includes both your name and the address associated with your account.

If you have moved, please follow the instructions on changing your address.
