What are Nearby Neighborhoods?
Nearby Neighborhoods give you the ability to have discussions with neighbors in neighborhoods close to yours. This could be useful to:
- Share information about suspicious activity that might affect several neighborhoods.
- Find a lost pet that may have wandered into an adjoining neighborhood.
- Rally neighbors from multiple neighborhoods to address civic issues.
- Spread the word about events like a local theatre production or neighborhood garage sale.
- Ask for advice or recommendations from the widest range of people in your community.
How are Nearby Neighborhoods determined?
[Note: 1/31/2017]: We have recently updated the formula we use to select Nearby Neighborhoods, which may result in new nearby connections as we apply the formula to neighborhoods across the country. If you do not want to see content from a particular neighborhood, you can always personalize your list of Nearby Neighborhoods to stop seeing new posts from that community.
Your Nearby Neighborhoods are initially determined by a distance-based algorithm. We automatically connect your neighborhood with the neighborhoods that are closest to you geographically, without creating too large of a coverage area. Also, as new neighborhoods are created near you, we'll automatically add them to your list of nearby neighborhoods.
You can personalize your Nearby Neighborhoods to choose exactly which of your Nearby Neighborhoods you would like to communicate with.
Can I still post my message to my neighborhood only?
Yes. You always have the option to post either to your neighborhood only, or to include Nearby Neighborhoods. Simply choose the neighbors you would like to post to when posting on Nextdoor.
Can neighbors from Nearby Neighborhoods see messages I have posted only to my neighborhood?
No. Posts just to your neighborhood are never displayed outside your neighborhood.
Is my profile information still private?
Yes. Information about you is never shared outside your neighborhood unless you explicitly choose to post/reply/thank a message shared with nearby neighborhoods, and even then, those neighbors can only see your name, neighborhood, photo and activity stats. Your street name, street address, or any of the other profile details you have shared with your neighborhood cannot be seen by nearby neighbors.
Can I choose to see posts and receive emails from my neighborhood only?
Yes. To view posts on the website from your immediate neighborhood only, select your neighborhood name under "LOCAL" in the left-hand menu on your Nextdoor homepage.
To reduce or stop emails from nearby neighborhoods, use the Nearby Neighborhoods Email Settings Page. Even if you reduce or stop nearby neighborhood notification emails, you will still see replies from nearby neighbors to posts from your neighbors.
