What is address verification?

Last Updated: Sep 23, 2016 10:47AM PDT

Nextdoor ensures a secure and trusted environment for your neighborhood website by requiring all members to verify that they live at the address associated with their account. Only neighbors who can verify that they live in your neighborhood can participate in your Nextdoor neighborhood website.

Nextdoor uses the following methods to verify the address of every member:

  • Mobile or home phone.  We will call your mobile phone or your landline to provide you with a unique code to verify your account. Your phone billing address must match the address on your Nextdoor account to use this verification method.

  • Credit or debit card. Nextdoor can instantly verify your home address through a credit or debit card billing address. Your billing address must match the address on your Nextdoor account to use this verification method. We do not charge your card, store your information, or share it with any third party sources.

  • Social Security Number (SSN). Nextdoor can instantly verify your home address through the last 4 digits of your SSN. We do not store this information or share it with any third party sources.

  • LexisNexis. Nextdoor can use LexisNexis to compare your email address to your residential address, instantly verifying your account if public records find a match. We do not store this information or share it with any third party sources.
Note: LexisNexis is a third party service, used by businesses and government, that provides information from public records, publicly available information, and other sources.

  • Leads. Leads of a Nextdoor neighborhood can use the Verify neighbors feature to vouch for and verify neighbors.

  • Neighbor invitations. Accepting a personal email invitation from a verified member in the same neighborhood will allow you to join Nextdoor as a verified member.
Note: If you accept an invitation from a verified member in a different neighborhood, you will need to verify your account through one of the other verification methods.

  • Postcard. Nextdoor can send a postcard to the address listed on your Nextdoor account with a unique code printed on it. This code will allow you to verify your account. Postcards usually take 3-5 business days for delivery.

Not all verification methods are available for all residential addresses.
